 | JoAnn McIntosh and Janet Hankins are two grandmothers whose hearts broke when they saw this picture of a small child with no shoes outside in the snow. This picture was attached to an email from a U.S. military friend of JoAnn’s who was stationed in Afghanistan and detailed to a refugee camp. The email talked about the terrible conditions, the difficult winter and the lack of clothing; especially shoes.
On February 9, 2005 (Ash Wednesday), JoAnn forwarded the email on to some friends. Although she knew she could not solve all the problems, JoAnn decided she could be a “beggar” for this cause. When Janet saw the picture and read about the great need for shoes, she immediately contacted JoAnn and they agreed to start collecting shoes through their church, Our Savior Lutheran Church of Laurel, Maryland. One hundred and ninety five pairs of shoes were shipped immediately.
The response was overwhelming! So overwhelming, that they realized collecting shoes would be no problem; but the cost of shipping them would. The solution was to start a non-profit corporation seeking tax deductible contributions. Thus began Shoe Beggars for Christ, Inc.
